The Forest and the Trees

Productivity with Purpose

I help you get important things done

There are two big ways to be unproductive

You can gaze endlessly at the Forest

You set beautiful goals. Then you sit back and admire them, but never work toward them.

You can get lost in the Trees.

You hack down trees left and right, but make no progress toward anything important.

Or you chop down one tree and sit on the stump, sobbing, with no idea what to do next.

I help you balance both perspectives and ensure your productivity always has a purpose.

For you

  • Establish priorites
  • Work toward important goals
  • Feel productive and fulfilled
  • Be less overwhelmed by urgent work

For your business

  • Define your mission
  • Eliminate unnecessary busy work
  • Boost your team's productivity and satisfaction
  • Focus on the right things at the right time

How the coaching works

  1. We discover your big-picture priorites
  2. We establish your big-picture goals
  3. We assess where you are, and lay out the actions required to reach the goals
  4. We develop your system: the routine that ensures you keep your forest and trees perspectives in focus every day

Step 4 is the crux. Setting goals and working toward them is easy enough. Developing a process for ongoing purposeful productivity that you will truly follow is challenging.

That's what sets "The Forest and the Trees" apart. It's tailored to you and your strengths, so you can implement it confidently.

Communication & Productivity Coach

My name is R.J. Nestor, and my forests include music and theatre, my family, my writing, my coaching and business pursuits, and a few more besides.

The Forest and the Trees grew out of my own productivity journey. In my life, I've set many goals without making progress—and made lots of progress in directions I didn't want to go. Those mistakes helped me discover a structure and method for purposeful productivity.

I also realized in my communication and sales coaching that people lack the structure to define what they want to say, and often that lack extends to not knowing what to do either.

The Forest and the Trees draws on lessons I've learned from David Allen's Getting Things Done, Dan Charnas's Work Clean, Mark Manson's The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, Eugen Herrigel's timeless Zen in the Art of Archery—and lots more. Add in my own experience climbing out of unproductive muck, and you get a process that can help anyone accomplish valuable, meaningful work.

I'm a coach, and your journey is tailored to you. I haven't written The Forest and the Trees book (yet...) and I'm not here to promote myself. I want to meet you and give you the tools to navigate your own forests.

Make sure your daily grind serves your big picture.
